Stone Lion

This stone lion sculpture from the Tang Dynasty is a finely carved representation of the strength and protection associated with lions in ancient Chinese culture. Carved from stone, the lion’s poised and muscular form reflects its role as a guardian. The expressive posture, with its head slightly turned and body positioned in an alert stance, adds a dynamic sense of vigilance to the sculpture. Stone lions like this were often placed at the entrances of important structures, including temples and tombs, to ward off evil spirits and provide protection.
